Visit the world-renowned game reserve of Kenya! Embark on a three-day-two-night safari from Nairobi to Masai Mara. The Masai Mara is regarded as one of Kenya’s wildlife viewing jewels, as there is a good chance of spotting the ‘Big Five’, cheetah’s, hippo’s crocodiles and much more. The reserve is also where the annual wildebeest migration takes place, as these majestic animals cross the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania and into Kenya.
Mara means “mottled”, which is how the Maasai gave it its name due to its expansive open plains mottled with woodlands. Situated in the Great Rift Valley, the Maasai Mara is proudly Kenya’s largest national reserve with an area of 320 square km.
Although it is actually the northernmost part of a larger ecosystem encompassing Kenya’s Loita plains and Tanzania’s Serengeti, which makes up a total of 25,000 square km. The largest river, the Mara River, runs north to south through the reserve, towards Lake Victoria through Tanzania. That being said, wildlife is bountiful in the area, game viewing is exciting any time throughout the year – Although the peak is during the annual wildebeest migration from July to October.
There is a large number of other plains game include zebras, different species of antelopes, giraffes and warthog, which are residents of the are all year round. The Mara is a perfect kingdom for the lions but there are also smaller predators such as cheetahs, hyenas and jackals that roam the Mara area.
Another natural inhabitant is of course, the Maasai people. A semi-nomadic ethnic group known as fierce warriors and have largely remained very independent, staying strong to their traditional values and lifestyle. The Maasai never hunt, but live peacefully alongside the wildlife in harmony, this co-existence makes the Maasai Mara one of the world’s most interesting and unique wilderness regions.
